Add Leather Handles to Fabric Storage Bins!

Upgrade your storage bins! Just a little bit of leather makes a big impact.

I found this fabric bin at Michael's during a 50% off storage sale. Only five dollars! It needed some help to realize its full potential.

You will need:
  • Fabric Storage Bin
  • 10 3/4" x 2" Strip(s) of Leather
  • Hemp Cord
  • Seam Ripper
  • Rotary Cutter, Ruler & Mat
  • Awl
Flip the basket around and use the side that does not contain the label pocket. Use the seam ripper to remove the existing handle. Don't worry about the holes. They'll be covered up. Pull away any loose threads.

Cut two, seven-inch long pieces of hemp cord. Use the awl to make a hole 3/4 inch to the side of each  handle square.

Pull the ends of one piece of hemp through one hole, leaving a loop. Repeat on the other side.

Cut a piece of leather 10 3/4" by 2". The ends should very slightly overlap the edges of the bin. I used pieces cut from an old leather coat.

Pinch the ends of the leather and pull through the hemp loops. Pull the loops tight, then knot securely. The knots should be inside of the bin. If you like, glue pieces of fabric over the knots.

Add another strip!
